BOD Reduction, Shepherd’s Eggs

Eliminate BOD, TSS, Evaporation Ponds and Odor: Case Study

BOD Reduction Case Study

Shepherd’s Eggs processes 800k eggs per day. The Hydro Reserve 800GPM BOD Reduction system enabled them to eliminate evaporation ponds, surcharges and odor and has been in daily operation for over 5 years.

Challenge

With high TSS and BOD of over 20,000 mg/L, Shepherd’s Eggs, in Spanish Fork, Utah, faced a mandated shutdown due to odor and water contamination. Their evaporation ponds covered large areas and were creating odor violations with local regulators. Using conventional wastewater treatments strategies would have been cost prohibitive.

Solution & Application

After a seeping study, water analysis and pilot trial, Shepherd’s Eggs implemented a full scale 800 GPM modified ultra-filtration system (MUF). Rather than use energy intensive aeration, Hydro Reserve’s mechanical system used minimal power. The maintenance went from daily to quarterly.

The system continues to operate successfully after 5 years.

System Results & Benefits

  • BOD Reduction 94%
  • $500K Annual Savings

Case Study: BOD Reduction

Case Study Hydro Reserve - Shepherds Eggs 800 GPM BOD Reduction System
Application
  • Eliminate Evaporation Ponds:
Aerating ponds is energy intensive and the land can now be used for other economic purposes.
  • Complete Odor Control:
In egg processing, 10% of eggs are broken, resulting in odor if not properly addressed. All odor was eliminated.
  • Reuse Waste for Economic Gain:
The waste byproducts of eggs, when properly captured, have economic value and can be sold as feed supplements for livestock.
Success Factors & Key Metrics
  • Key Metrics: Shepherd’s Eggs was able to significantly reduce costs while elimination BOD Related rotten egg smell and water contamination. They were able to take back land uses for ponds and could reuse the waste byproducts.
  • BOD Reduction 94%
  • $500K Annual Savings
  • Smaller Footprint
  • Guaranteed Performance
